Hello! My name is Jose M. Consuegra and I am the owner, founder, and tutor for Understandable Tutor.

How did you become a professional tutor?

I started as a pre-med student back at FIU. I always wanted to be a doctor but my interests took me in a VERY different direction.

I originally started tutoring biology, chemistry, and philosophy at the Center for Academic Success at FIU. There, I did all kinds of chemistry tutoring, biology tutoring, and- once COVID-19 hit- I did almost only online tutoring. That was the biggest and most difficult challenge I faced, at the time.

During the pandemic, I wanted to go into the classroom since I saw so many high school teachers were leaving the field. I thought it would be great to be a high school chemistry teacher and give back to my community.

Once I became a teacher, I learned how hard of a job it really is. After 3 years of being in the classroom, I decided to become a professional tutor and really give all that I am to my community through online tutoring, in-person tutoring, and free classes.

You do this all by yourself?

I sure do!

Well…there are somethings that I need help with which I will talk about in a second.

But first, yes, I do almost everything on my own from making instagram posts, this website, SEO work on my website, to putting up flyers around local restaurants, universities, and cafes.

I am pretty much a one-person show. This way, I can control exactly the amount of effort and quality I put into all of my work. I really enjoy working on something and making sure it is up to my standards. For example, the online tutoring I offer is really about finding out who the student is, what help they need, what materials they are looking for, and then figuring out how I can best serve them. This takes time and effort and being a teacher did not allow me to give specialized attention to my students. As a private science tutor, I can take all the time and resources I need to provide the highest quality online tutoring and in-person tutoring every student needs.

Something I need help is are word-of-mouth. I ask my students to share my tutoring services with their friends, families, and colleagues so everyone has a chance to work with a private, credentialed educator.
